Skin harvested from my left thigh

Skin taken from my Left Thigh

A skin graft involves taking a piece of skin from an uninjured area of the body (called the donor site) and using it to provide coverage for an open wound. When primary closure is impossible because of soft tissue loss and closure by secondary intention is contraindicated, a skin graft is the next rung on the reconstructive ladder.

It is not a technically difficult procedure  but does require some surgical skills

it is however exceptionally painful!!

An extremely thin strip of skin was harvested from my left thigh and once stretched using what is like a pasta machine it was used used to cover the muscle from my back which repaired the ripped muscle sustained during the collision - eventually it becomes strong enough to be like normal skin

Sheila

When I was in hospital I asked my other half, Sheila,  to rub some Aqueous Cream into my Left Thigh - She put a liberal amount on and then proceeded to rub it in - after a few seconds  it started to really sting - we called the nurse and whilst she was washing it off she said "I cannot understand it - this is pure we will have to send it away for analysis -

It was at this point that Sheila then told us - "oh Yes I have just eaten some SALT & VINEGAR crisps and have not washed my hands"

Talk about rubbing salt Ito an open wound - ‘oh how we laughed’ since then her email address has been Florence - as in Florence Nightingale!!
