Addenbrooke's Hospital is an internationally renowned teaching hospital in Cambridge England
It has strong affiliations to the University of Cambridge and is based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus
The hospital was founded in 1766 on Trumpington Street with £4,500 from the will of Dr John Addenbrooke, a fellow of St Catharine's College. In 1976, the hospital moved to its present premises on the southern edge of the city at the end of Hills Road. The hospital is run by Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is a designated academic health science centre
Once in hospital - where the staff there undoubtably also saved my life - (having already had it saved by the roadside)
I had a 20 hour operation..
12 hour orthopaedic & an 8 hour plastics back to back in adjoining theatres
I was then on life support for 48 hours and apparently it was touch and go as to whether I would survive
The surgeon promised to phone Sheila whenever he was finished and he was true to his word phoning her EARLY Sunday morning
I was given 14 pints of blood
and was in hospital for only 6.5 weeks
At about week 3 - in the space of a couple of days I was told how lucky I was not to have lost my foot - not to have lost my left leg above the knee and of course not to have lost my right leg
At about week 4 I suddenly burst into tears and sobbed and sobbed a nurse stayed with me for nearly 1.5 hours just holding my hand until I calmed down - I was told that they fully expected this but were not sure when nor the intensity of it
